We are coming into the colder months of the year and any aches and pains can be made feel worse by the cold. Support your pet by keeping them away from drafty areas especially resting areas. Reduce running and jumping as that can put a lot of strain on the joints and try increase low impact exercise such as swimming and underwater treadmill; This will help support the joint by working out the muscle and keeping the ligaments and tendons supple.
Comfortable resting and sleeping places are very important for helping support the joints. Dogs actually like to rotate their sleeping areas throughout the day and night, so it is helpful to have a few beds or mats in different draft free areas for them to choose from. This is to help them avoid hard cold floors in drafty areas which will make their joints sore.
it is really important to keep the dog in good physical condition for two big reasons.
1) Added body weight puts extra pressure on joints.
2) Fat is pro-inflammatory and will increase the inflammation around an already inflamed joint.
It is challenging to keep weight down in a dog which may already have limitations on exercise. A low calorie diet is helpful to keep weight down as well as increasing fiber to make them feel fuller for longer. As I mentioned before low impact exercise is important to keep ligaments and muscles strong so they can support the diseased joint.
