Getting a new puppy and wondering how much you should feed them? Understanding what and how to feed your new puppy is very important.
A puppy grows quickly and needs sufficient energy requirements to fuel that speedy growth. They start weaning from their mother’s milk between three and four weeks of age and are generally introduced to dried puppy nuts, softened with warm water initially.
They are normally weaned fully and on a complete diet of puppy food by the age of seven weeks. If being fed a good puppy food they need not be given milk beyond this stage.
How Many Times Per Day Does My Puppy Eat?
- Pups up to 3 months of age are generally fed four times daily.
- Pups from 3 to 6 months of age are generally fed three times daily.
- Pups from 6 to 12 (24 for giant breeds) months of age are generally fed twice daily.
Dry Food or Wet Food?
When choosing a food, you have a choice between wet and dry forms. Dry food is composed of small biscuits called kibbles. The kibble size varies according to the size of the breed of dog and generally most manufacturers have puppy foods for small, medium and large breeds.
Dried foods are much better value than wet food (cans or pouches) and it is better for dental health when the young pups temporary teeth and replaced with the permanent set at about five months of age. Better puppy foods contain DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid that is crucial for the healthy structure and function of the puppy’s brain.
Puppies of larger breeds, greater than 25kg when fully grown, mature at a slower rate and therefore need a puppy food that allows a slower rate of growth. Optimal growth for these breeds is for them to develop slowly not growing very big, very fast. Rapid growth, and also excessive exercise, in young larger breed pups result in excessive stresses in the developing skeleton that can give rise to bone and joint problems in later life.
Diet and weight management is an important thing to get right from the beginning so that your pet can lead a full and heathy life.
